Purpose
Based on the BrightBytes survey, only 20% of teachers surveyed ask students to give feedback to each other. Additionally, the survey indicated that 66% of teachers surveyed say they have never had students receive feedback from someone other than their teacher. However, feedback from the teacher is crucial to learning as well. The new T-Tess appraisal system includes this critical component on the scoring rubric. In order to score above proficient on Dimension 2.5, teachers must provide academic feedback as they monitor and adjust student progress through the course of the year. Through Canvas, the teacher has the ability to provide feedback on assignments as they are grading, allowing students to instantly receive feedback in order to refine their work.
Format
This course is a competency-based course, which requires implementation and reflection of learned strategies. The format will be delivered in two parts: online modules and reflection of implementation. The first part of the training will be online. Participants will be given a three-day window to complete the online modules. The electronic resources will be made available through Canvas, the district’s learning management system (LMS). The content will guide the participant through the learning process of providing formative feedback. The information in the modules will be available for reference after the initial phase of the training.
Learning Expectations
This online course will allow teachers to investigate best practices for providing formative feedback on student assignments. In addition, teachers will learn about the importance of having students provide feedback to each other. As a result, teachers will create a lesson where the use of feedback is a viable piece of the instruction that allows student to refine their work prior to final submission. Upon completion of the course, teachers will have a better understanding of how effective formative feedback enhances student learning.
